Nate, you truly are a 'blue scholar'! What fun to read such a deep dive into history and your own experience. I know that there have been books written about the history of sanitation, toilets, etc. but I very much doubt that any of the writers shared your personal experience. Seems there is a book waiting to be written based on your articles! :)

Thank you for one of the most entertaining articles I've read in months. I loved the plays on words and the ties to history and literature and theology.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Jerry. Seeing the absurd, hidden connections between our inner and outer, natural and supernatural worlds is just the kind of thing a sewer is good for!

I'm not ashamed to admit that I skipped to the last section, because as we know, the best shit is all at the bottom of the septic tank.

That statue story at the beginning reminds me tangentially of Dagon in 1 Samuel, haha.

Fascinating and funny! My hubby is a student of permaculture, so I’ve become familiar with the in’s and out’s of water storage, conservation, and waste treatment in a domestic setting. What’s old is new again…

Great article!

I hope you know that most advances in human life expectancy don't come from medicine, they come from sanitation...and more specifically from sewer systems that reduce water-borne diseases!

So yay plumbers and sewer workers!

Yes! I've said a couple times that for each medical mission a church sends, there need to be a team or two (or three!) of plumbers that go along too.
